Dazu Musik von Enya "A day without rain"
– was will man mehr? Aber jetzt kommt "Only Time", das Lied, das später zum Lied
des 11. September wurde. Unsere Idylle ist zerbrechlich. Auch in diesem Jahr hat
Al Qaida zugeschlagen. In Madrid. Und dann die Opfer verhöhnt: "Ihr liebt das
Leben, wir lieben den Tod." Und jetzt, lass uns anstoßen auf das Neue Jahr und natürlich: Auf das Leben! Das Leben! L´Chaim!
Mühltal, December 28th 2004 Dear Debbie, has 2004 been a good year for you? I am just looking outside my window to watch the snow-flakes falling. It looks very peaceful. And I am listening to music by Enya: "A day without rain" – what more to ask for? But the third song on the CD is "Only Time", the song that later became the song of September 11th. Our peace is fragile. This year Al Qaida has hit the Madrid trains. And then they told us: "You love life, we love death." When I first heard this statement I was hopeful that, at least now, everybody would understand that it is not about poverty, bad living-conditions or globalisation, it is about murder, cold-blooded murder, and nothing else. But my hopes were not fulfilled, still today, a lot of Germans and Europeans believe the U.S. or Israel to be the biggest threat to world peace. And I wonder why? Does it really console us to know that we Germans are only number five (or was it number ten?) on Al Qaida´s death-list? Is it a consolation for Christians to know that they are only number two after Jews on the terrorists´ list? To me this is no consolation at all. And that is why I appreciated so much the speech George W. Bush held on the 60th anniversary of the allied landing in Normandy. He ended his speech with, what in my view, was the sentence of the year 2004: "And we would do it again for our friends." Great. Unfortunately, I have the impression that we Germans are not aware of the significance of this statement. At least, I have not seen it in any of the many end-of-the-year reviews. It means that the Americans would again liberate us from a brutal dictator, if necessary, and I am sure they would also help us in case of a terrorist attack. What a wonderful promise! And now, let us drink to the new year and of course: "To Life, To Life, L´Chaim!"
Love, Karin
