Dear Debbie,

do you know which song is No. 1 in the German charts? It is "Schnappi, das kleine Krokodil", "Snappy, the little crocodile".

Does this tell us anything about the German state of mind? About infantile escapism? About people living in a fairy-tale-world unwilling to face the terrorist threat? Instead, blaming the U.S. for the bad in the world?

Well, in any case fleeing reality seems to be quite popular in Germany these days. It was in 2002 when I first thought: Germany is like a drowning man refusing to take the life-belt because this one might cause allergies.

And during the months preceeding the war in Iraq, this poem came to my mind, I tried to translate it into English, here is the result:

The friend is dissected,
until the friendship is dead.

The enemy spared
and even applauded
for making promises
and laughing out loud,
because we do believe him -

we foolish doves of peace.

And I´m afraid this attitude has not really changed for better. Maybe we believe that sni-sna-snappy is going to protect us ?
