Michael Moore

Dear Michael Moore,

for quite a long time I refused reading any of your books because the extracts of "Stupid White Men" I had read in the newspaper were already deterring enough. But then I decided that to form my own opinion I had to read at least one. So I went to the library – I did not want to support you financially – but the book was lent out and the waiting-list very long – we Germans love your books. So I had to buy it, but at least I got a paperback-edition of "Stupid White Men" in German for € 7,90. And then I started reading and after the first ten pages I felt deeply bored. I wondered how such an agglomeration of polemics, insults and allegations had become such a bestseller in Germany. And people do not only buy it and read it, no, they believe it and cite it as if it contained everlasting truths. Whereas in fact it is an endless enumeration of insults. Ironically, we Germans are very concerned about freedom of opinion in the U.S., but your book is the best example that these worries are completely unfounded. You are calling the Bush administration "stupid white men" or even "junta", Bush a "Thief-in-Chief" and nothing absolutely nothing happens to you. I really wonder what would happen to a German writer if he called our government all these things. Recently somebody even got a problem because he had said that our Chancellor allegedly colours his hair! Quite a banality compared to your insults.

Of course, there were also passages in your book I liked e.g. the one about recycling trash or the one about Clinton and the democrats, but that is not enough to make me change my mind. Especially not after having read your road-map to peace in the Middle-East which is meant to be ironical, but at the latest when you accuse Israel of state-terrorism against the Palestinians the irony is lost.

Sorry, Michael Moore, but your book which has become the anti-Bush bible of a lot of Germans to me it is simply an insult to human intellect.

Maybe you should sligthly change the title of your book, how about: "Stupid White Man - Michael Megalomaniac Moore´s view on America and the world"?

Dear Michael Moore,

now your movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" has won "La Palme d´or" in Cannes. Congratulations! I have not seen the film yet, but it is said to be even more polemic than your books. So good for you, bad for Cannes. Instead of great cinema, great polemics has won.

And by the way, did you ask Ray Bradbury before using the title of his book "Fahrenheit 451", the temperature at which book paper catches fire, and burns ...?

Yours truly

Dear Michael Moore,

your movie has started in Germany this week, but I really do not know whether I am masochist enough to go and see it.

Soon more.
