Mühltal (Germany), September 21st 2002 Dear Debbie, our Justice Minister allegedly said: "Bush wants to draw the attention away from difficulties concerning domestic affairs. That is a popular method. Already Hitler has done it that way." (German daily paper "Die WELT", September 21st 2002, page 3, author Christoph Müller, chief editor of "Schäbisches Tagblatt"). Isn´t that outrageous? I was so upset, that I wrote an e-mail to your President to show that I do not support her remarks at all. This I wrote: Dear Mr. President, my name is Karin Quade, I am German, Protestant, 33 years old. I feel deeply ashamed of growing anti-Americanism in Germany. Many Germans seem to have forgotten their own history (even our Minister of Justice), but I know, thanks to you, the USA, I don´t wear a brown uniform, thanks to you, I say "Hi!" instead of "Heil Hitler!", thanks to you, I can travel wherever I want to travel, thanks to you, I can say what I believe, thanks to you, I live in a democracy, thanks to you, I can go voting. And tomorrow, I am going to vote for a chancellor who feels the same hoping that it is not too late to restore the special German-American relationship. God bless America! (e-mail sent to President Bush on September 21st 2002, 16:41) Love Karin Mühltal (Germany), September 23rd 2002 Dear Debbie the government has been re-elected by a razor-thin majority. But at least, the Justice Minister is going to be replaced. Love Karin © Karin Quade September 2002 |
