Dear Debbie,

I wrote a letter to the American family that lives nearby, I told you about them. This I wrote:

I am Karin Quade, living in Wilhem-Leuschner-Str. 9 ( white and blue painted house). We have probably already met in the street without knowing each other. I am writing to you because I want you to know that I feel terribly ashamed of our government´s anti-American policy. Although I am Protestant, I do not agree either to the anti-American remarks of "official church leaders" like the ones of Manfred Kock who was comparing George Bush´s arguments to the ones used by Islamic fundamentalists (website of ekd, "Stuttgarter Zeitung", February 4th 2003). I think this is outrageous. I am very glad that you are living here and I do hope that all the American soldiers who are now stationed in Iraq will soon and safe come back to their families.

Dear Debbie

I have thrown my letter into their letter-box one week ago and they have not answered yet! Did I write anything wrong? You know I do not believe in prejudices but if there is one thing that is probably typical of Americans is that they react immediately and directly, which I appreciate. So, what´s wrong?

Dear Debbie,

I am so relieved! The American family just came to my house to tell me how much they appreciated my letter. They had not answered earlier because they do not empty their letter-box very often. But as soon as they had found my letter they came to my place – one prejudice proven true. Now, I do not have to worry any more. Great!
