Liebe Debbie,

letztes Jahr habe ich mich noch beklagt, dass Antiamerikanismus salonfähig sei. Und heute? Muss ich mich korrigieren, er ist mittlerweile nicht nur salonfähig, sondern ein Salon-Muss. Ein Spruch in der Art von "die Amerikaner sind Kriegstreiber" oder "amerikanische Christen sind Fundamentalisten" sollte in einer gelungenen Konversation nicht fehlen. Und da Antiamerikanismus meistens einhergeht mit Antisemitismus und Antizionismus sind Statements wie "Israel führt einen Vernichtungskrieg gegen die Palästinenser" ebenfalls sehr beliebt. Immer wieder gern in die Runde geworfen wird auch "die Juden haben zuviel Einfluss auf die amerikanische Regierung".

Und das sind keine Gesprächsbrocken, die ich in einem Trainingscamp für Neonazis oder einem Ausbildungslager für islamistische Fundamentalisten aufgeschnappt habe. Nein, das kommt aus der Mitte der Gesellschaft.

Einen besonders interessanten Vorschlag hatte wieder einmal der Neffe meiner Freundin zu machen, du weißt schon, der 25-jährige Jura-Student, jung, dynamisch, erfolgreich. Er meinte, dass der Polizeischutz der Synagogen nicht mehr vom deutschen Steuerzahler finanziert werden sollte.

Daran musste ich heute wieder denken, und da heute Buß- und Bettag ist, für evangelische Christen ein Tag der Besinnung und Neuorientierung, habe ich - ausnahmsweise - einmal öffentlich gebetet auf www.busstag.de :

"Immer noch müssen Synagogen in Deutschland von der Polizei geschützt werden. Ich wünsche mir, dass uns das nicht nur betroffen macht, sondern, dass wir uns persönlich getroffen fühlen. Denn dann werden die Polizeiautos eines Tages überflüssig sein."

Dear Debbie,

has 2003 been a good year for you? I look back with mixed feelings. Of course I was glad to see Saddam Hussein´s statues fall, see him finally caught. But looking at the German-American relations makes me really sad. I had not imagined how bad the relations between our two countries could get. You might say, well, this has nothing to do with our private life. But this is not quite the case.

In Germany, this year, almost every private conversation sooner or later came to talk about the United States of America and usually ended by blaming them for the bad in the world.

The extreme dryness and heat of this summer - who is to blame? George W. Bush because he has not signed the Kyoto protocol – that Putin did not sign it either, does not matter.

Hunger in the Third World? The USA to blame because they spend too much money on war production, instead of giving it to the poor.

The division of Europe? Mr. Rumsfeld, not Franco-German unilateralism.

How come? Why does a majority see it that way and why do I not agree?

Because I spent six wonderful weeks at your house, because of your hospitality?

Then the problem of anti-Americanism could easily be solved by sponsoring exchange-programs between our two countries.

Is it because I am grateful to you for having brought democracy and prosperity to our country?

The current wave of anti-Americanism shows that relying on peoples´ memory and gratefulness is too optimistic.

Or is my grandmother responsible? She used to tell me how glad she had been to be in the American occupation zone after the war. I remember one story in particular: It is about my father, who then was a little boy sitting on the steps in front of their house with the little neighbours´ girl: she was lucky she had a huge sandwich, my father was chewing a chewing-gum that the American soldiers had given to him. I bet you can imagine the end of the story? My father got the huge sandwich and the little neighbours´girl the already chewed chewing-gum! A sentimental story? Maybe, but nonetheless true.

They are just playing "Mandy" at the radio, a new cover-version by Westlife. Weird, isn´t it? Everything comes back. I´d wish the same for our friendship.
