"Un monde parfait" – "A perfect world" - My song of the year 2005 Mühltal, December 30th 2005 Dear Debbie, although I absolutely loved listening to "Schni-Schna-Schnappi", the little crocodile from the Nile, I think it has been topped by "Un monde parfait", a song that has been No. 1 in the French charts for weeks and remained quite some time in the German top ten as well. It is performed by 11-year-old French Ilona Mitrecey and it is really cute. She describes how her perfect world looks like, and it somehow reminds me of the Franco-German Schroeder-Chirac approach to international challenges. And if you listen carefully, you will even realize that a crocodile is mentioned here as well. I translated excerpts of "A perfect world", but it sounds much better in French (see below): "... This morning, I imagine a drawing without stars A bird, a child, a goat, I did not fall asleep in wonderland, but I woke up in winter wonderland today. And Schroeder is no longer Chancellor. Mühltal, December 22nd 2005 I cannot imagine a more beautiful song right now in this cold rainy weather: "Amarantine" by enya*. Full of hope and well, yes, hopeless romantic. For amaranthine does not only mean of a dark reddish-purple colour, but also everlasting. The amaranth is an imaginary flower that never fades. I only hope we will not need it, like "Only time", to remember the victims of yet another horrible terror attack.
Ich kann mir im Moment bei diesem kalten regnerischen Wetter wirklich kein schöneres Lied vorstellen: "Amarantine" von enya*. Voller Hoffnung, und nun ja, hoffnungslos romantisch. "Amaranthine" steht nämlich nicht nur für die Farbe Purpurrot, sondern auch für eine Blume, die nie verwelkt. Ich hoffe nur, dass wir dieses Lied nicht wie "Only time" auch wieder brauchen werden, um an die Opfer eines fürchterlichen Terroranschlages zu erinnern.

In good company Mühltal, December 2nd 2005 Dear Debbie, I have just seen I am in good company: Donald Rumsfeld has said that calling terrorists "insurgents" is too much of an honour for them *. And for a few seconds I thought that Tagesschau had gotten the message, too, for in their yesterday´s report on Iraq they were talking about "terrror suspects". I was just on my way to mark this in my calendar when they went on calling them "insurgents", and – "rebels". Donald Rumsfeld suggested a completely new term: "ennemies of the legitimate Iraqi government". I still prefer calling them what they are: Terrorists. How about you? Karin

What is objective? Mühltal, November 30th 2005 Dear Debbie, what is objective? Sometimes it happens to me that I criticize remarks or articles as being anti-American and people tell me: No, this is not anti-American, this is just presenting the facts. Let me give you an example: George W. Bush has recently been to China and he has asked for more democracy and freedom for the Chinese people. The second German program ZDF has reported on that in heute-journal *. And yes, they have shown the facts, but did this happen in an objective way? Claus Kleber, the ZDF anchor man, introduces the film by explaining that China – in contrast to the U.S. - is trying to have capitalism without democracy and human rights. So far, so good. He then goes on saying: "Diese Auffassungen prallten heute aufeinander, berichtet Eberhard Piltz aus Peking, und kann am Ende in nie dagewesener Klarheit zeigen, wie George Bush vor die Wand läuft." Difficult to translate into English for me, but I will try: "These two views were clashing today, reports Eberhard Piltz from Peking, and at the end he is able to show in never reached clarity how George Bush is running against a wall." The report that follows shows the facts e.g. George W. Bush asking for more human rights for the Chinese people, attending a mess, and then mountain-biking – at this occasion he is called the "fitness-fanatic from Washington" **. The report ends by showing George W. Bush trying to leave a press-conference by walking out of a door that is locked. The reporter says "he wanted to leave, which was not really easy, but added a humouristic note to the day in Peking."*** Well, what do you make out of that? Is it just presenting the facts or ridiculing the American President and with him the thousands of Chinese hoping for more freedom? Up to you to make up your mind. Bad prospects Mühltal, November 30th 2005 Dear Debbie, Susanne Osthoff is the first German hostage in Iraq. Her kidnappers threaten to kill her if the German government does not stop the cooperation with the Iraqi government and the training of Iraqi security forces. Demands that cannot and must not be fulfilled. Still I hope that she is going to be freed soon. And I hope that nobody is ever going to call these kidnappers "insurgents" any more, for what kind of insurgents should they be? Insurgents against the reconstruction of Iraq? Against democracy? Against life? Insurgents against life – mh, maybe I am a bit old-fashioned, but I still prefer calling them what they are: Terrorists. And unfortunately, they are well organised, planning tactically; they have chosen the right moment for their kidnapping: During the first days of Angela Merkel´s Chancellorship when it became clear that she was going to improve relations to the U.S. The terrorists´aim is to divide the West and in the past they have been quite successful in doing that. For the future, we cannot afford this division any longer: United we stand, divided we fall. A simple truth. But I suspect that quite a lot of people in Europe still have not yet gotten this message. All in one day Mühltal, November 24th 2005 Dear Debbie, liebe Debbie, I voted for Angela Merkel because I expected her to bring back a sense of reality to German foreign policy, I did not expect her to manage in only one day! But in fact she did. Bravo! Angela Merkel hat es in nur einem Tag geschafft, die deutsche Außenpolitik wieder auf den Boden der Realität zu stellen. Das hätte selbst ich nicht gedacht. Bravo! Karin
Angela Merkel ist Kanzlerin! - Angela Merkel is Chancellor! Mühltal, 22. November 2005 Angela Merkel ist Kanzlerin – herzlichen Glückwunsch! Dies ist ein sehr guter Tag für die deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen! Der beste seit sieben Jahren. Hoffentlich ist jetzt Schluss mit diesem größenwahnsinnigen "Wir sind wieder wer!" – nur keiner weiß wer. Erste Anzeichen gibt es schon. So wird die neue Bundesregierung wohl keinen Sitz im Weltsicherheitsrat mehr anstreben. Stattdessen bessere Beziehungen zu den U.S.A. und mehr Distanz zu Putin. Auch am Verhältnis zu Polen soll gearbeitet werden. Und gegenüber dem Iran? Bislang hat sich "die deutsche Iranstrategie darauf beschränkt, nett zu den Mullahs zu sein.", schreibt Jeff Gedmin in der WELT und meint, "Für ein Land, das ernstgenomen werden will, ist das keine ernstzunehmende Haltung." Er hat recht! Also lass uns anstoßen auf die neue Ernsthaftigkeit der deutschen Außenpolitik - mit einem ganz großen Lächeln! Ich hole den Sekt aus dem Kühlschrank ... Karin
Angela Merkel is Chancellor – Congratulations! This is a very good day for German-American relations! The best in seven years. Hopefully German megalomania has come to an end now: No more seeking for a seat on the UNSC, better relations with the U.S., more distance to Russia, better relationship with Poland. And what about Iran? So far "the German strategy on Iran has been restraint to being nice to the Mullahs.", says Jeff Gedmin in "DIE WELT", and goes on: "For a country that wants to be taken seriously this is no serious attitude." He is right! So let us raise our glass to the new seriousness of German foreign policy – with a big smile! Karin
German Way Mühltal, November 20th 2005 Dear Debbie, yesterday was the official farewell of Chancellor Schroeder, a Chancellor who is proud of his foreign policy. At the end of the ceremony, the military orchestra played "My way". And I am glad that the "German way" we were going with Schroeder has come to an end now. What did it mean in terms of foreign policy? To me it seemed to mean the following: - Russia: Don´t mention Chechnya! Karin
Dieser Weg Mühltal, 15. November 2005 Liebe Debbie, als ob das Wetter es geahnt hätte, hat es passend zum morgigen Buß- und Bettag auf nass-kalt umgeschaltet. Aber das passt doch auch ganz gut zu einem kurzen Moment der Rückbesinnung und Neuorientierung. Hat sich seit dem letzten Jahr irgendetwas geändert? Sind Anti-Amerikanismus und Antisemitismus weniger geworden? Wohl kaum. Nur weiß ich jetzt, dass ich nicht allein bin (Links). Das ist doch auch schon etwas. Deutsche National-Elf - Rettung von links? Mühltal, 12. November 2005 Liebe Debbie, gerade spielt Deutschland gegen Frankreich, noch steht es 0:0. Vor dem Spiel haben J. B. Kerner und Franz Beckenbauer den Zustand der deutschen National-Elf analysiert *. Ergebnis: Eklatanter Linksfußmangel. Aufruf Kerners an die Zuschauer sinngemäß: "Gehen Sie in den Garten und schauen Sie, ob Sie mit links schießen können. Wenn ja, bitte beim Deutschen Fußballbund melden." Nun würde ich ja gerne meinen Beitrag für den deutschen Fußball leisten, aber dass ich kein Linksfuß bin, das weiß ich auch, ohne in den Garten zu gehen. Allerdings kann ich auch mit rechts nicht schießen. Also muss Klinsmann doch mit dem vorhandenen Personal auskommen - wenn er denn irgendwann einmal eine Entscheidung trifft. November 2005 Liebe Debbie, nach den schrecklichen Anschlägen von Amman sind Tausende von Jordaniern auf die Straße gegangen, um gegen Al Qaida zu demonstrieren. Das macht Hoffnung! Weniger Hoffnung macht das heute journal. Leider wollte oder konnte es uns trotz dieser Bilder den Ausruf eines Jordaniers nicht ersparen, der dann den Rest des Beitrages überlagerte: "Amerika ist verantwortlich für alles! Für die Gewalt in diesem Land und im ganzen Nahen Osten!" Paris burning Mühltal, November 7th 2005 Dear Debbie, the only surprising thing about French suburbs burning is the fact that people are surprised. They have been burning every year! But in Germany you did not hear much about it – it did not happen in the States. At school (twenty years ago!), however, we have read Christiane Rochefort´s "Les petits enfants du siècle" which has been first published in 1961! Already then, the author described the misery in the suburbs of Paris. What I remember most is the bitterly sarcastic view she took on children´s allowances: the first child is the fridge, the second the washing-machine, the third the dish-washer and the fourth, finally, the TV! And now all these babies have grown up and you cannot simply ignore them any longer. Some of them have become angry young men or criminals and some of them even murderers. Yesterday, an old woman got almost burnt to death and I am just hearing that one of the beaten up victims has died. I have no sympathy with these criminals who are destroying their own future, their neighbour`s future or even life. I do have sympathy, though, with the ones who are opposed to the violence and who have been left alone by Politicians who have probably never ever put a foot into these areas. Where is the police? Where is the State? Did Schroeder already call Chirac to tell him what terrible things may happen when a strong state is absent? And the most sarcastic thing of all is: you cannot even put these young criminals to prison, at least not, if it is true what I have recently read about French prisons * – they are said to be the worst in Europe. So what could be done to stop the fire? Maybe M. de Villepin should write a little poem? November 2005 Liebe Debbie, das ist doch wirklich mal eine super-schöne Überraschung zur Abwechslung, nicht nur dass im November noch die Sonne scheint und das Thermometer 18 Grad anzeigt, nein, meine Website wird sogar in Italien gelesen und in der zweimonatlich erscheinenden Zeitschrift Ideazione lobend erwähnt. Enzo Reale schreibt unter der Überschrift: "Das andere Gesicht Europas" einen Artikel über europäische Blogs. Not only that the sun is shining in November with about 18 degrees Celsius, no my website is even read in Italy and recommended in the two-monthly Ideazione. The author Enzo Reale has written an article about European blogs called "The other face of Europe". Coming to German blogs, he first speaks highly of David Kaspar – no wonder - and later he also mentions my website describing it as promising, emotional and efficient. Andrea Nahles - der Beitrag der SPD zu Halloween Mühltal, 31. Oktober 2005 Andrea Nahles wird Generalsekretärin der SPD - das hat Franz Müntefering nicht verdient, wirklich nicht. Hut ab vor seinem Abgang, sehr würdevoll. Hätte ich nie gedacht, aber irgendwie macht mich das traurig. PS: Jetzt doch nicht. War wohl nur ein Halloween-Scherz.
Currywurst und Fußball: Nicht von dieser Welt Mühltal, 16. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, selbst am Sonntagmorgen geht die Schröder-Beweihräucherung munter weiter. In der WELT am Sonntag wird unter der Überschrift "Kanzlertränen lügen nicht"* wehmütig der Beginn einer neuen Politiker-Ära verkündet. "Am Ende hat der Rationalismus doch noch gewonnen. Und der Abschied von Gerhard Schröder ist auch der Abschied von emotionaler Politik." Na, endlich! Zum Irak-Krieg lese ich: "Und letztlich ist auch die deutsche Haltung zum Irak-Krieg weniger Schröders Weitsicht zu verdanken als seinem Bauchgefühl. Es war sein Glück, dass er auf diesem Weg in einem Teil Europas zum Sympathieträger wurde." Wohlgemerkt, einem Teil Europas, denn, wenn ich mich vage erinnere, gab es da einen "Brief der Acht", acht europäischer Staaten, die gar nicht mit der unilateralistisch-arroganten Politik Deutschlands und Frankreichs einverstanden waren, darunter auch Polen. Und ein gutes Verhältnis zu Polen liegt uns doch immer noch am Herzen, oder? Ich könnte noch viel aus diesem Artikel zitieren, aber mit Abstand das Beste ist folgendes: " "Schröder hat eine Art "geistig moralische Wende", von der Helmut Kohl geredet hatte, erreicht. Auch, weil Deutschland werden wollte wie er: populär und selbstbewusst. Ein weltoffener Currywurst-Liebhaber und Fußballfan." So, und ich gehe jetzt hinaus in die Herbstsonne. Vielleicht komme ich ja an einer Currywurstbude vorbei. Da kann ich mir dann die Ergebnisse der geistig moralischen Wende in Deutschland anschauen. Ich freu mich schon. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, sogar bei seinem tränenreichen Abschied am Mittwoch konnte sich Schröder einen Seitenhieb auf die USA nicht verkneifen. Er sagte: "Ich möchte keine Katastrophen nennen, die zeigen, was passieren kann, wenn organisiertes staatliches Handeln fehlt. Ich könnte Länder nennen, aber die Position, die ich noch bekleide, verbietet das, aber jeder weiß, dass ich die USA meine." 1 Aus den deutschen Medien habe ich davon übrigens nichts erfahren, die waren wohl zu sehr damit beschäftigt, Schröder nachzuweinen.2 Es ist zum Heulen. Mühltal, October 15th 2005 Dear Debbie, on Wednesday Chancellor Schroeder said he would not play a role in the next government. Finally! What I did not know until I read it on Davids Medienkritik was that in his farewell speech he said: "I do not want to name any catastrophes where you can see what happens if organised state action is absent. I could name countries, but the position I still hold forbids it, but everyone knows I mean America." I had not heard about this in the German media. They were focussing on the tears in his eyes. This could make me cry. Karin
Zwei Tränchen in den Augen und die Welt steht Kopf? Mühltal, 13. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, gestern hat Schröder seinen Rückzug aus dem Kabinett erklärt. Endlich! Und was muss ich dazu in der WELT* lesen: "Und Schröder hatte Tränen in den Augen. Ich habe das Foto vor mir liegen und empfinde Respekt vor diesem Mann. Ich möchte jetzt nichts hören von Show, von Effekten, von Selbstdarstellertum. Die letzten Wochen waren ein Ausdruck von Mut, von Leidenschaft und Verwegenheit, wie er selten geworden ist in der deutschen Politik." Lieber Johann Michael Möller, es gab genau einen Zeitpunkt, zu dem Schröder würdevoll hätte abtreten können, und das war am Wahlabend des 18. September direkt nach Bekanntwerden des Wahlergebnisses. Alles was danach folgte, war nicht Ausdruck von Mut, sondern permanente Missachtung elementarer demokratischer Gepflogenheiten. Haben Sie den Auftritt Schröders in der Elefantenrunde wirklich schon vergessen, oder wollen Sie uns diese Unverfrorenheit allen Ernstes als Leidenschaft und Verwegenheit verkaufen? Das, was sich Schröder in den letzten drei Wochen geleistet hat, müsste jedem Demokraten Tränen in die Augen treiben. Stattdessen überschlagen sich die Kommentare vor Rührung. Wieder einmal ist dem Kanzler ein genialer Mediencoup gelungen. Erst unterstellt er den Medien, sie hätten eine Kampagne gegen ihn geführt, und schon bekommen diese anscheinend ein schlechtes Gewissen und ergehen sich in Lobeshymnen. Da kommen mir die Tränen. Glücklicherweise gibt es aber noch Autorinnen, die sich von der allgemeinen Schröder-Gefühlsduselei, die ja fast die ganze WELT, pardon Welt, erfasst zu haben scheint, nicht beeindrucken lassen. Und das gilt natürlich auch, wenn eine Frau Bundeskanzlerin wird. Aber Herr Müntefering hält das für "nicht lebenswirklich". Der Sekt bleibt im Kühlschrank Mühltal, 10. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, Frauen wird ja oft nachgesagt, sie könnten nicht logisch denken. Ich versuche es jetzt trotzdem mal: CDU und CSU haben mehr Stimmen als die SPD erhalten, also stellen sie die Kanzlerin und erhalten mehr Ministerposten als die Sozialdemokraten. Logisch, oder? Aber vielleicht kann ich es ja doch nicht, oder in der Politik gelten die Gesetze der Logik eben nicht. Oder wie soll ich die heutigen Gesprächsergebnisse zwischen CDU/CSU und SPD sonst verstehen? Angela Merkel gibt ohne Not Ministersessel und Grundsatzpositionen auf. Die Frechheit von Gerhard Schröder hat gesiegt. Nein, zu meiner großen Erleichterung lese ich auf meiner Packung ALDI Erdnüsse (Schwarzer Pfeffer, pikant gewürzt) den Warnhinweis: "Produkt kann Spuren von Nüssen enthalten." Das will ich doch gehofft haben! K.
Nebel über Berlin Mühltal, 8. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, du kannst dir gar nicht vorstellen, was für ein märchenhaftes Wetter wir heute hatten: Morgens dichter Nebel, der sich dann im Laufe des Tages aufgelöst und einer strahlenden Herbstsonne Platz gemacht hat. Im Hinblick auf die politische Großwetterlage kann man das nicht gerade behaupten. Dort liegt auch bald drei Wochen nach den Wahlen noch dichter Nebel über der Kanzlerfrage. Und – soll ich mal einen Blick in die Kristallkugel werfen? Falscher als unser Bundespräsident kann ich ja auch nicht liegen, und wenn ich mich irre, hat das keinerlei Konsequenzen für unser Land. Ich riskiere es einfach mal. Und was sehe ich? Ich sehe eine Frau, ja, Angela Merkel, aber leider nur sehr verschwommen und unscharf, und jetzt kommt jemand hinzu und überlagert ihr Bild. Schröder! Mit einem triumphierenden Grinsen auf den Lippen. Hm, was das wohl bedeuten mag? Nun, möchte ich ja nicht schwarz sehen, aber ich befürchte, dass Angela Merkel einen schweren Stand haben wird, selbst wenn sie erst einmal zur Kanzlerin gewählt werden sollte. Denn es gibt nun einmal eine linke Mehrheit im Bundestag, und die wird Angela Merkel bei der ersten brisanten Frage, z. B. Kündigungsschutz, aus dem Amt kicken. Ich sage nur: Konstruktives Misstrauensvotum. Die SPD wird dann von sich behaupten, die "soziale Gerechtigkeit" gesichert zu haben, und keiner wird sich darüber echauffieren, dass Schröder auch mit Stimmen der Links-(Rechts)Partei gewählt wurde. Hielte er sich an die demokratischen Gepflogenheiten, wäre Angela Merkel schon längst Kanzlerin, aber das ist wohl zuviel verlangt von jemandem der verliebt ist in die Macht. Karin
Angst vor Bloggern? Mühltal, 5. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, wer hätte das vor einem Jahr gedacht? Die Zeitungen in Deutschland nehmen die Blogosphäre nicht nur wahr, sondern haben allem Anschein nach auch ein bisschen Angst vor ihr. Wie wäre sonst zu erklären, dass so viele Zeitungen jetzt eigene Blogs unterhalten? Beim Tagesspiegel zum Beispiel schreibt Caroline Fetscher in ihrem Blog Justworld, die Zeit hat sich Kosmoblog von Ulrich Speck geangelt (freundliche Übernahme, nehme ich an), bei der Welt am Sonntag hat den Kommentarchef Alan Posener höchstpersönlich das Blogger-Fieber erfasst, Apocalypso, und die Welt konnte Leon de Winter für sich gewinnen, Free West. Das sind doch mal gute Nachrichten! Karin Leben wir doch in der besten aller Welten? Mühltal, 3. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, wenn man aus der Provinz in die Hauptstadt fährt, kommt man oft aus dem Staunen nicht mehr heraus. Auf einer Konferenz zum Mittleren Osten letzte Woche erfuhr ich zum Beispiel, dass man die Hamas (=palästinensische Terrororganisation) mit der israelischen Chas Partei (=religiöse politische Partei) vergleichen kann. Auf meine Frage, wann denn die Chas-Partei das letzte Mal einen Schulbus mit palästinensischen Kindern in die Luft gesprengt hätte, bekam ich allerdings keine Antwort. Es war übrigens kein Hamas-Mitglied, das diesen Vergleich zog, sondern ein israelischer Journalist. Ich hätte es aber im Prinzip schon vorher wissen können, denn er war von Channel 1, laut seiner eigenen Aussage vergleichbar mit der ARD. Im Tagesspiegel 1 las ich dann am nächsten Morgen voller Verwunderung, dass Deutschlands Ansehen weltweit durch Schröders Widerstand gegen den Irakkrieg gestiegen ist. Obwohl, wenn man bedenkt, wieviele Diktaturen und menschenrechtsverachtende Regime es in dieser Welt gibt, mag das sogar stimmen. Weiterhin entnehme ich dem Artikel, dass Deutschland im weltweiten Kampf gegen den Terrorismus heute eine Führungsrolle einnimmt. Das würde sogar von der US-Regierung gewürdigt. Wow! Nun habe ich zwar die Antrittsrede des neuen amerikanischen Botschafters Timken in Berlin 2 gehört und er hat in der Tat die deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen über den grünen Klee gelobt, auch die Zusammenarbeit in Afghanistan und im Irak, aber eine führende Rolle im Kampf gegen den Terrorismus hat selbst Timken Deutschland nicht attestiert. Nun hatten ja in Deutschland viele gegen den neuen Botschafter ins Feld geführt, er käme aus der Industrie und sei kein gelernter Diplomat. Ich glaube nach seiner Antrittsrede sind diese Bedenken restlos zerstreut, denn die war nämlich diplomatischer als diplomatisch. Ich habe sogar kurz überlegt, meine Website sofort vom Netz zu nehmen, denn wenn wir doch in der besten aller Welten leben, sind meine Briefe ja völlig überflüssig. Rot-Rot-Grün: langfristig doch die bessere Alternative? Mühltal, 2. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, zwei Wochen nach den Wahlen muss ich meine Einschätzung korrigieren. Vielleicht wäre Rot-Rot-Grün, zumindest langfristig gesehen, doch die bessere Alternative für Deutschland, denn:
Der Weg durch die Wüste würde also ein Jahr dauern, genauso lange, wie es auch regulär noch gedauert hätte, nur dass Schröder sich jetzt zusätzlich mit Lafontaine und Gysi herumärgern müsste. Und das hätte dann zumindest einen gewissen Unterhaltungswert, vorausgesetzt man verfügt über den erforderlichen Galgenhumor. Karin
Paradise Now or No? Mühltal, 02. Oktober 2005 Liebe Debbie, nun weiß ich ja nicht, ob ich politisch gebildet bin, aber nachdem ich das Filmheft PARADISE NOW 1 der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung 2 (=bpb) gelesen habe, muss ich es wohl sein, zumindest was diesen Film angeht. Eins verstehe ich allerdings nicht: Nach der Lektüre der 24 Seiten der bpb, die dem Film wohlwollend gegenübersteht, komme ich zu dem Schluss, dass dieser Film auf keinen Fall in deutsche Lehrpläne eingebunden werden sollte. Wie das? Der Film schildert die letzten 24, bzw. 48 Stunden im Leben zweier potentieller palästinensischer Attentäter, Said und Khaled. Einer der beiden, Said, sprengt sich am Ende in einem israelischen Bus in die Luft. Die Folgen dieses Attentats werden dem Kinobesucher aber nicht zugemutet 3, nein der Film zeigt nicht das Blut, die Toten, die Schwerverletzten, die abgerissenen Gliedmaßen, nein, Israelis spielen in dem ganzen Film weder tot noch lebendig eine Rolle, sonst könnte sich der Zuschauer ja am Ende mit den wahren Opfern, den Israelis, identifizieren. Nein, das geht nun wirklich nicht, besteht doch das Bestreben dieses Films eindeutig darin, die Selbstmordattentäter als die eigentlichen Opfer darzustellen. Die Gründe für ihr Attentat werden aber nur am Rande gestreift und bleiben vage: Armut, Demütigung, Minderwertigkeitskomplexe. So blickt der Zuschauer am Ende auf eine weiße Leinwand, die Assoziationen an Tod, aber auch Erlösung und Paradies weckt. Das ist eigentlich schon widerlich genug, aber das Unglaublichste an dem Film ist für mich die Abendmahlsszene. Hier wird versucht, den christlichen Glauben im Sinne der Attentäter mit ins Spiel zu bringen. So zeigt der Regisseur eine Szene, in der zwölf palästinensische Terroristen zusammen eine Art Abendmahl feiern 4 . Immerhin weist hier die bpb dankenswerterweise daraufhin, dass die Botschaft des Abendmahls Jesu (Frieden, Einheit, Vergebung) den Zielen von Terrorgruppen im Nahen Osten diametral entgegensteht. Aber wieso wird der Film dann für Schulen empfohlen? Eine der Aufgaben der bpb laut ihrer eigenen Website ist es, Verständnis für politische Sachverhalte zu fördern 5 . Dem Filmheft nach zu urteilen, gehört dazu auch das Verständnis für Selbstmordattentäter. Das ist Verklärung anstelle von Aufklärung. Und so bleibt nach der Lektüre des Filmheftes eigentlich nur noch eine Frage offen: Wann benennt sich die Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung um in Bundeszentrale für politische Verblendung? Karin PS: Der Vollständigkeit halber nenne ich noch die Preise, die der Film bei den diesjährigen Internationalen Filmfestspielen in Berlin gewonnen hat: "Blauer Engel" für den besten europäischen Film, den Publikumspreis und den Amnesty-International-Filmpreis. Nicht zu vergessen das Prädikat "besonders wertvoll" der Filmbewertungsstelle Wiesbaden 6. Die FBW ist eine Einrichtung aller 16 Länder mit dem Status einer Oberen Landesbehörde, die der Rechtsaufsicht des Hessischen Ministeriums für Wissenschaft und Kunst untersteht. Sie hat die Aufgabe, Filme in allen ihren Formen durch die Vergabe der Prädikate "wertvoll" und "besonders wertvoll" zu fördern. Noch Fragen?

Wie wäre es mit Neuwahlen? - How about having new elections? Mühltal, Sept. 18th 2005 Mit den vorgezogenen Bundestagswahlen sollte mehr politische Stabilität in Deutschland erreicht werden. Das heutige Wahlergebnis bedeutet jedoch im besten Fall Stillstand (Große Koalition), im schlimmsten Fall (Rot-Rot-Grün) wirkliche, und nicht nur gefühlte, politische Instabilität. Wie wäre es mit Neuwahlen? The reason to have elections one year early was to achieve more political stability in Germany. Today´s election results mean at best standstill ("Grand Coalition), at worst (Red-Red-Green) real, and not just felt, political instability. So how about having new elections?

Does civic engagement need "making-it-possible-structures"? Mühltal, Sept. 17th 2005 Dear Debbie, I do not know whether the Left believes in God, but they surely do believe in the State; see Schroeder´s recent remarks on national catastrophes "We need not a weak state, but a strong state."* With view to the suffering of so many Americans his remarks were highly unscrupulous. But sometimes this left-wing trust in the state can be highly amusing. This is what happened to me in Berlin this summer. I was invited to attend a discussion about youth civic engagement. There were American and German guests and the first I met was an American. When I introduced myself I told him a had a website against anti-Americanism and he answered he was for anti-Americanism. Mmh, you can imagine small-talk getting slightly difficult after this introduction, so I was glad when the discussion started. One of the points that struck me most during the discusssion was that there was 60 % youth civic engagement in the U.S and only 30 % in Germany. My immediate – maybe naive - conclusion for Germany was: Let us take the U.S. as an example. But as you can imagine this argument was immediately rejected. No the remedy was – you may guess it – yes, to institutionalize civic engagement. To me a contradiction in itself. Because I believe civic engagement to be a state-free area, something that people do because they want to, and they decide when and how to do it. But in Germany, I had to learn, we have the "Federal Network Civic Engagement" (Bundesnetzwerk Bürgerschaftliches Engagement = BBE). It is supposed to advance civic engagement. It calls itself independent, but is – at least partly - financed by the Family Ministry. The manager of this network described the network`s aims using terms I am almost unable to translate into English (maybe because their meaning remains a little bit nebulous even in German): "Infrastruktur der Engagementförderung" (infrastructure of engagement-advancement), "Engagementpolitik" (policy of engagement), and my top favourite is "Ermöglichungsstrukturen" which could eventually be translated by "making-it-possible-structures". During the discussion "attac", the movement of globalisation critics, was taken as an example. So I suspect that a project against anti-Americanism would have no chance of being sponsored. 4th 2005 on ARD, ZDF etc. Hurricane Katrina - Blaming the victims II Mühltal, Sep. 10th 2005 Dear Debbie, he was not able to exploit this year´s flood in Germany because fortunately it was not as bad as the Oder flood in 2002. So what does our creative Chancellor Schroeder do? He uses Hurricane Katrina and the misery of thousands of Americans to campaign. In the big election debate last Sunday* he compared recent floods in Germany to Hurricane Katrina and suggested that Germany would be better prepared than the U.S. to cope with national catastrophes because we have a strong state. This is ludicrous! There can be absolutely no comparison between Hurricane Katrina and the floods in Germany. But who cares? In public opinion Schroeder has won this election debate, although I believe Angela Merkel was far better (Chapeau Angie!) and his party wins 2 % in the opinion polls.** Red-Red-Green is now at 49,5 % and CDU / FDP only at 47,5 %. Mühltal, August 30th 2005 Dear Debbie, it is heart-breaking to see the pictures of New Orleans, the flooded city streets, people racing through chest-deep water, destroyed homes. My thoughts are with the people in the American South who are still suffering the terrible after effects of hurricane Katrina. These pictures in mind it is outrageous that our Minister of the Environment, Jürgen Trittin, is blaming the Americans and President Bush for this natural catastrophe. He said: "The American President has closed his eyes to the economic and human damage that natural catastrophes such as Katrina – in other words, disasters caused by a lack of climate protection measures – can visit on his country." * Blaming the victims. We have seen this before, after 9/11. And instead of offering help to the victims, he offers "to hand America a worked out proposal for the future of international climate protection." * I have hardly ever seen so much cold-hearted and cynical arrogance. "Ich war dabei" - der geniale Rückblick auf unseren
pro-westlichen Heimatabend von Michael Miersch

Ich war dabei
Der erste Pro-Westliche-Heimatabend (PWHA) hat einen signifikanten Anteil der Deutschen, die nicht auf Nationalpazifismus und Staatsanbetung abfahren, zusammen gebracht. Die Organisatoren Enno Dittmar und Dorothee Müller (Applaus!!!) hatten das Ereignis als zwanglose Kennenlernparty konzipiert, was ihnen rundum gelungen ist. Bei einigen lag die Erwartung höher (Manifest? Verein? Partei?). Aber die Große Mehrheit der zirka sechzig Anwesenden kam schnell überein, es erstmal eine Nummer kleiner zu versuchen: Regionale Netzwerke sollen geknüpft werden. Der Freundeskreis vieler Pro-Westler (PWs) ist erheblich geschrumpft, als sie nicht an der wütenden Amerika- und Israelverdammung der Volksgemeinschaft teilnahmen. Regionale Netzwerke könnten dieses Defizit möglicherweise kompensieren. Außerdem wird Achim Hecht von atibuerokratieteam.de gemeinsam mit den „Freunden der offenen Gesellschaft“ (Applaus!!!) einen Meta-Blog aufbauen, von dem aus alle Websites und Blogs der PWHA-Teilnehmer bequem zu erreichen sind. Hierzu ein persönlicher Vorschlag: Da erfahrungsgemäß neue Strömungen immer auch Spinner, Querulanten und Fanatiker anziehen (das ist übrigens der Hauptgrund, warum es in Deutschland nahezu unmöglich ist, eine neue Partei zu gründen), sollten wir einen kleinen Check beim Meta-Blog einbauen. Ich fände ein Vetorecht aller auf dem Meta-Blog Versammelten gut. Soviel zu den praktischen Resultaten. Erfreulicherweise blieb der von mir heimlich befürchtete Zusammenprall der Kulturen aus, obwohl die Teilnehmer aus drei Gruppen mit sehr unterschiedlichem Stallgeruch kamen: Klassische Konservative, Junge Liberale und Noch- oder Ex-Linke in verschiedenen Stadien der Abtrünnigkeit vom alten Glauben. Das Spektrum reichte vom Botho-Strauß-Liebhaber bis zum Bahamas-Autor, vom CDU-Sympathisanten zum Anarcholiberalen, vom Adorno-Anhänger zum Katholiken. Vermutlich kam es deshalb nicht zu nervenden Ideologiedebatten, weil der Anteil der sympathischen, freundlichen und konstruktiv denkenden Menschen ziemlich hoch war – und weil man als deutsche Freunde Amerikas und Israels doch gern ein bisschen zusammenrückt. Und noch ein kurzer soziologischer Überblick, für all die traurigen Menschen draußen im Lande, die diesen Abend verpasst haben und sich nun fragen, was das wohl für Leute sind, die da in München zusammenkamen: Alle Altergruppen zwischen Anfang Zwanzig und Anfang Sechzig waren vertreten, die Älteren bildeten aber eindeutig die Minderheit. Modisch stachen bei den Jüngern die bunten T-Shirts der IDF (Israels Armee) hervor. Frauen waren ebenfalls deutlich in der Minderheit. Jeden, der die wenigen aber wundervollen PWHA-Teilnehmerinnen nicht gesehen hat, kann man aber nur bedauern. Hätte jemand im Saal die „Sonntagsfrage“ gestellt, wäre wohl absolute Mehrheit für Schwarz-Gelb rausgekommen, die Mehrzahl der Anwesenden hat jedenfalls die gegenwärtige Regierung gründlich satt. Alles in allem: Bröckers, von Bülow und Co. werden sich schwarz ärgern, dass Sie diese finstere Verschwörung nicht vorher aufdecken konnten. Aber jetzt ist es zu spät, ihr Schnarchsäcke. Ich selbst habe diesen wirklich anregenden Abend im Fast-Dating-Verfahren genutzt und versucht, mit möglichst vielen Leuten zu sprechen, die ich vorher nicht kannte. No hope - no future? Mühltal, August 5th 2005 Dear Debbie, when our Chancellor Schroeder announced a few months ago that we were going to have new elections I was very pleased. I thought that Schroeder would step back (in my view his first patriotic act) or give up, but no, he is going on, successfully! According to an opinion poll* of August 4th, CDU and FDP do no longer have a majority, they would only get 48 % of the votes, the same as Red-Red-Green. So now I am very pessimistic about the outcome of the elections, if they are going to take place at all. Our Federal Constitutional Court will hold a hearing on Tuesday 9th. So let us wait and see. Enough is enough! Mühltal, August 4th 2005 Dear Debbie, I do not quite see why Germany should be qualified for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, I even think that Germany`s bid is in contradiction to our government´s foreign policy. On the one hand, the UN is regarded as a holy institution, although brutal regimes are member-states, on the other hand, Germany would have been against the war in Iraq even if the UN had been in favour of it. On the one hand, Germany wants Europe to speak with one voice, on the other hand our Chancellor Schroeder is trying to get a permanent seat for Germany, not for Europe, on the UN Security Council. And what does the EU say? "No position" on who should get a permanent seat. Lovely! The US and China are much more direct: they oppose the plan. The US – I perfectly understand. Who on earth could be so naive to believe that after all that has happened the US would support a permanent seat for Germany? But China? This must have been a real deception for our Chancellor Schroeder - all the lobbying for lifting the EU weapons embargo in vain! And even Russia`s Putin, our beloved "prince of peace", does not support us. How ungrateful! Has he forgotten that Schroeder has never criticised him in public? But it comes even worse: Italy`s UN envoy Marcello Spatafora accused the Group of Four, India, Brazil, Japan and Germany, of using financial coercion and blackmail to lure poor countries into supporting their efforts to get a seat in the council. Using undiplomatic language – how un-European - he said: "It is a shame ... enough is enough." I could not have said it better.

August 2005 Liebe Debbie, bevor ich mir Oskar Lafontaines Thesen zur sozialen Gerechtigkeit antue (tausendmal probiert, nie hat´s funktioniert), schau` ich mir doch lieber den bekloppten Frosch auf VIVA an. Karin Soziale Gerechtigkeit II Mühltal, 03. August 2005 Liebe Debbie, auch die Gewerkschaften nehmen ja gerne für sich in Anspruch, für soziale Gerechtigkeit zu kämpfen. Nun ist mir allerdings schleierhaft, wie Arbeitsplatzvernichtung der sozialen Gerechtigkeit dienen soll. Denn wenn durch übersteigerte Forderungen der Gewerkschaften Unternehmen in den Bankrott oder ins Ausland getrieben werden und Arbeitsplätze verloren gehen, dann vertreten die Gewerkschaften noch nicht einmal die Interessen ihrer eigenen Klientel. Ganz zu schweigen von den Arbeitslosen, die allenfalls durch eine Flexibilisierung des Arbeitsmarktes eine Chance auf Arbeit hätten. Oder wagen die Gewerkschaften tatsächlich eine völlige Neuinterpretation des Begriffes soziale Gerechtigkeit? Statt "Arbeit für alle!", "Keine Arbeit für alle!"? Falls diese These nicht verfängt, kann die Suche nach einem Sündenbock zumindest nicht schaden, hat sich wohl die IG-Metall gedacht. Anders ist das Titelblatt der Mai-Ausgabe der IG-Metall-Zeitung* nicht zu erklären: Eine hämisch grinsende Mücke mit Zylinder in den Farben der US-Fahne, dazu die Überschrift "Die Aussauger – US-Firmen in Deutschland. Verteidigt wird dieses Titelblatt mit dem Hinweis auf die Freiheit der Kunst*. Hm, für meinen Geschmack ziemlich entartet, diese "Kunst". Auf das nächste Titelblatt gehören meiner Ansicht nach jedenfalls nicht Blackstone, KKR und Investcorp, sondern Engelen-Kefer, Sommer und Müntefering, vielleicht nicht im Namen der Kunst, so doch im Namen der – sozialen Gerechtigkeit? Soziale Gerechtigkeit I Mühltal, 31.07.2005 Liebe Debbie, dass die SPD für soziale Gerechtigkeit ist, das wissen wir nun schon lange. Was das aber genau bedeuten soll, das ist genauso lange im Dunkeln geblieben. Nun, seit dem ZDF-Sommerinterview von Franz Müntefering* letzten Sonntag ist mir einiges klarer geworden. Zum Wahlprogramm der CDU sagt er Folgendes: "Da ist nichts drin an sozialer Gerechtigkeit. Das Wort kommt überhaupt nicht vor. Das können wir besser als Frau Merkel." Prima! Das heißt, die bloße Erwähnung des Begriffes soziale Gerechtigkeit reicht aus. Möglichst oft darüber reden, der Rest kommt von alleine, oder wie war das im Falle Volkswagen? Mitbestimmung ist doch bestimmt sozial gerecht, oder Herr Müntefering? Aber die Bordellbesuche "im Interesse des Unternehmens" gab es nur für den Gesamtbetriebsrat, also wichtige "Linke". My thoughts are with the families of the victims and all the British people. Is this website naive? Mühltal, June 15th 2005 Dear Debbie, I´ve recently been told that my website was too naive and that I should concentrate more on Realpolitik. Well, to make it perfectly clear: If being against anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism should be naive, then I´d gladly be. But what exactly does naive mean? Let´s have a look at what my Collins Dictionary of the English Language says (it is published in 1979, but I think it will do): "naive = lacking developed powers of analysis, reasoning, or criticism". Given this definition I cannot help but thinking of our red-green government and Joschka Fischer´s latest book* in which he still hopes the U.S. would take Europe as an example; I have to think of Eurocrats that want to build Europe against the U.S. (and at the moment even against Europeans themselves!); of people calling Putin a straight democrat and people who really believe that if we stopped drinking coca-cola and eating hamburgers Islamist terrorists would start loving us. So, no need to worry about my naivety - my feelings are in perfect harmony with the requirements of Realpolitik - and I love the way it feels. Wow! This is the speech I have been waiting for since the red-green government took power. Better late than never? Is American optimism arrogant and aggressive? Mühltal, May 26th 2005 Dear Debbie, there are people who do not like Americans because of what they call "America´s arrogant and aggressive optimism". I´ve even heard Americans say so. Mmmh, as far as I can see it is thanks to America´s optimism that Europe, especially Germany, have been liberated from national socialism. And well I must admit that one needs a lot, a lot of optimism to believe that a people who has made lamp-shades out of human skin and tissue out of human hair will ever be part of the civilized world again. Especially, when you consider that Hitler – unlike Saddam Hussein - had been democratically elected. And when looking at the fact that right after the war a lot of Germans were angry at Hitler not because of the concentratrion camps but for having lost the war. Indeed, believing you can re-educate this people needs tons of optimism. I will be eternally grateful to the Americans for having been so optimistic. Thanks to this optimism I was allowed to grow up in freedom and democracy. Without ever having fought for it, actually without ever having done anything to deserve it. So I believe the mimimum I can do is saying thank you, thank you, thank you. Instead, your President is being compared to Hitler, and as far as I know, there has never been an apology. It is such a shame. I am sure that after a regime change in Germany this autumn things are going to change for better – maybe this optimism is too arrogant and aggressive, but I´ll take the risk. I was surprised to see young people jumping from one stele to the other. From afar, it looked like an adventure playground. So today, I came back and walked through this memorial myself - and I felt nothing, absolutely nothing. Tired of walking and a little bit disillusioned I sat down on one of the stelae - and saw the "Benutzerordnung" telling me I was neither allowed to have a barbecue in the memorial, nor to sun-tan in a bathing suit on the stelae. Arrived there I was not sure which direction to take, but what do you have to look for when attending a Jewish / Israeli event in Germany? The green uniforms of the German police. Then you cannot miss it. So I found the "I like Israel" event. And it made me happy and sad at the same time - happy because there was a stage set up, with Israeli songs, dancing and speeches about Israel - sad because there were so few people, maybe 100 in a city like Berlin. Well, maybe a lot more showed up in the following hours. I hope so, because I like Israel. Later that day, I heard a lot of speeches about Israel and the special relationship between Germany and Israel etc., but as long as the buildings in which these speeches are held have to be protected by the police, this does not impress me much. Franz Müntefering, the chairman of the Social Democratic Party, is attacking the business world by criticizing "the internationally growing power of capital and the total economization of short-winded trade for profit"1. And believe it or not: Chancellor Schröder and Wolfgang Clement minister in charge of the Economy and Labor support Müntefering´s rhetoric. And they are not alone: according to an opinion poll2 two thirds of Germans agree to Müntefering´s criticism. Is this the direction we have chosen? Does Germany go East? Is this the reason why our government prefers trading with countries like Russia and China? And how do big business deals being signed with Russia and China match the anti-capitalist rhetoric? Schröder in an interview last December said that going to China helping the German economy was patriotic3. Is it also patriotic calling German employers "market-radical and anti-social"4? And where have the former leftist ideals gone? You don´t remember? I was thinking about human rights, justice and so on. All forgotten? About a week ago Russian President Vladimir Putin came to Hanover to open the world´s largest industrial fair with Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Important business deals have been signed. Chechnya? Not mentioned. Same with China. Winning business contracts with China is patriotic. Human rights? Never heard about. And that´s not all! Our Chancellor even wants the European Union to lift it´s weapons embargo on China. Although China is threatening Taiwan. And again, if China attacked Taiwan it would be the U.S. who would guarantee freedom and human rights in the region. I´d really wish the Left would TEST the WEST! Mühltal, April 4th 2005 Dear Debbie, "there is no liberty without truth, ... there is no liberty without solidarity, ... there is no liberty without sacrifice." John Paul II in his historic speech at the gate of Brandeburg on June 23rd 1996*. He held this speech in German and when again hearing these words, I have tears in my eyes. It was a great speech, a speech against oppression and dictatorship, against National Socialism and Communism. A speech I can agree to without being Catholic, without supporting his religious doctrine and somehow wondering why such a speech did not lead him to support more strongly the liberation of the Iraqi people. But all these real or only seeming contradictions will not minimize my respect for his role in the downfall of communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union which finally led to German reunification. So it almost broke my heart seeing him sitting at his window on Easter-Sunday, helpless, trying to speak but not being able to. And hearing about his death on Saturday evening made me very sad. As a Protestant, I never thought I would, but I will miss him, the Pope who at the end of his speech in Berlin reminded us all that: "There is no liberty without love." And do you know what has been the greatest gift of all? Walking through "Brandenburger Tor", symbol of division for so many years, now standing for a reunited Germany. I have always been in favour of reunification because I thought that East Germans had the right to live in freedom and democracy as well. But these days, with each vote that goes to extremist parties in East Germany (see last year´s election results in Brandenburg and Saxony) I lose a bit of my enthousiasm. I supported reunification because of the ideal of liberty, and now people are voting for parties who fight liberty. I was celebrating the victory of capitalism over communism and today a lot of votes are going to parties opposing capitalism. And according to a recent opinion poll* East Germans have more trust in the Russian than in the American President. Something must have gone wrong. Or is it true that a bird that has been in a cage for 30 years has forgotten how to fly? But it would be unfair to criticize only the East Germans, for the poll also shows that only one third of all Germans is grateful to the Americans for their help with rebuilding Germany after WW II and with reunification. What has happened? Are we not grateful because we take democracy for granted? Because we never fought for it? Because it was – fortunately – imposed on us? Has the so-called "economic wonder" just been an appeaser to reconciliate Germans with democracy and as soon as the economic situation worsens it is not popular any more? I really do hope I am wrong, but it is difficult finding an explanation for the results of this poll: The Americans have liberated us from Nazi barbarism, they have rebuilt West Germany after WW II and they have helped us reunite Germany, they have done more for us than any other nation in the world. Infratest Dimap Spring in winter Mühltal, February 9th 2005 Dear Debbie, we have beautiful winter weather here in Germany. Sunny blue skies and about 5 degrees Celsius minus. In the garden the first snowdrops have appeared and even crocusses and primroses can be seen. Quite unusual early in February. Spring in Winter. Nature matches world politics: Elections in Iraq, handshake of Sharon and Abbas, Condoleezza Rice on a charming tour in Berlin, Jerusalem and Paris. Sometimes things develop a lot faster than expected. I´d only wish that all the prophets of doom would admit they have been wrong. But that is problably asking too much.
