Mühltal, February 25th 2005 Dear Debbie, our little rally was reported by the media, if you want to have a look: http://www.wdr.de/tv/monitor/real.phtml?bid=667&sid=125 (In case you don´t recognize me: I am the "Eskimo" with coat and scarf ;-) typically German following the order given by David´s Medienkritik "Dress warmly!") Reactions? A woman I met the day after the TV-report told me she did not like me any more because I sympathized with "war-monger" George W. Bush. That same woman had told me a few days before that she was going to buy a Che Guevara t-shirt for her son - but did not know where to get one and asked me: "Do you know who that guy was?" Yours, Karin Mühltal, February 24th 2005 Dear Debbie, our demonstration has been a great success, maybe not in numbers - we were only about thirty people - but in spirits! It has been great for me to meet so many like-minded people. Unfortunately there were counter-demonstrators there as well, and at the beginning I was a little bit scared, for some of them were already drunk at ten in the morning (!), but the police did a great job calming down the situation and protecting us. Still, a bizarre feeling remains. Isn´t it sad that the police had to be there to protect people like us who were only demonstrating for German-American friendship and the values that America stands for - freedom and democracy? And the same morning, just before attending the demonstration, I had heard on TV that two thirds of Germans do believe that it is not necessary to be grateful to the U.S. for what they have done to rebuild Germany after WW II and for Germany´s reunification any more*. That is extremely sad. And I really do not understand this attitude. I grew up in freedom and democracy thanks to the Americans, how could I possibly forget? Thank you, America! Liebe Debbie, unsere Demonstration war ein großer Erfolg, vielleicht nicht zahlenmäßig, - wir waren nur ungefähr 30 Leute - so doch im Geiste! Es war schön, so viele Gleichgesinnte zu treffen. Leider waren auch sehr viele Gegendemonstranten dort, so dass ich am Anfang ein wenig Angst hatte, denn einige von ihnen hatten schon um zehn Uhr morgens (!) getrunken, aber die Polizei hatte die Situation voll im Griff und hat uns super beschützt. Trotzdem bleibt ein merkwürdiges Gefühl. Ist es nicht traurig, dass die Polizei uns beschützen musste, obwohl wir lediglich für die deutsch-amerikanische Freundschaft und die Werte, für die Amerika steht, demonstriert haben? Und am selben Morgen, kurz bevor ich zur Demonstration gegangen bin, habe ich im Fernsehen gehört, dass zwei Drittel der Deutschen es nicht mehr für angebracht halten, den U.S.A. dankbar zu sein für ihre Hilfe beim Wiederaufbau Deutschlands nach dem 2. Weltkrieg und ihren Einfluss bei der deutschen Wiedervereinigung*. Das ist sehr traurig. Und ich kann diese Einstellung überhaupt nicht verstehen. Dank der Amerikaner bin ich in Freiheit und Demokratie aufgewachsen, wie könnte ich dies je vergessen? Vielen Dank, Amerika! Vielen Dank, Mr. President! Es war großartig, Sie hier zu haben! Mühltal, February 18th 2005 Dear Debbie, next Wednesday for the first time in my life I will attend a demonstration. If you had told me five years ago that one day it would be necessary to demonstrate for German-American friendship I would not have believed you. And that the participants are told not to wear anything that might inflame Bush opponents or identify them as a participant in this rally while on their way to the event, that is extremely sad. All the more reason why I am looking forward to meeting a lot of like-minded people on Wednesday. See you there! "America you are not alone!" Mühltal, 18.02.2005 Liebe Debbie, nächsten Mittwoch gehe ich zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben auf eine Demonstration. Wenn du mir vor fünf Jahren gesagt hättest, dass es einmal notwendig sein wird, für die deutsch-amerikanische Freundschaft zu demonstrieren, hätte ich dir nicht geglaubt. Und dass die Teilnehmer dieser Demonstration sogar darauf hingewiesen werden, um ihrer eigenen Sicherheit willen, bei der Anreise keine Sachen anzuziehen, die die Bushgegner zur Weißglut treiben könnten oder die sie als Teilnehmer an dieser Veranstaltung erkennen lassen, das ist traurig. Umso mehr freue ich mich, am Mittwoch möglichst viele Gleichgesinnte zu treffen. Bis dann! "America you are not alone!"
