It is an East-West-Side-Story about the impossible love between the West-German rock-star Udo and Jessy, a girl from East Berlin.

“As the first West German rock musician, Udo Lindenberg is granted permission to hold a concert in the GDR in 1983. Here, he gets to know the young Free German Youth girl Jessy. A fateful love develops between them, the future of which seems to be surrounded by walls and barbed wire. But while State Security attempts to put a stop to this ‘Udo mania’ with their own lookalike, the real Udo is already knocking more holes into the Wall.”

“Udo Lindenberg, rebel and rock poet, like no other believed untiringly in a reunified Germany without borders with his fanatic casual charisma. His unmistakable music, profound lyrics and unbridled openness again and again broke down the Wall in people`s heads and united hearts in East and West – long before the GDR became history.”

If you go and see the musical do not miss the exposition at the “Stage Theater am Potsdamer Platz”. It shows Udo Lindenberg paintings and some of the Stasi documents about him.

So where did they demonstrate? In front of the Iranian embassy? No.
In front of the Syrian embassy? No.
Did they demonstrate against Hamas because this organisation executed three men on Saturday, one of them for having “collaborated” with Israel? No.

They demonstrated in front of the American embassy in Berlin.

A poem, really?

To call this - in my view - anti-Semitic, anti-Israeli pamphlet a poem is an insult to all poets.

So what had to be said?

In his „poem“ Grass writes that Israel is claiming the right to a nuclear first strike with the aim of annihilating the Iranian people. Which is of course totally absurd. It is the Iranian President Ahmadinejad who repeatedly threatened to wipe Israel off the map. But all Grass has to say about Ahmadinejad is that he is just a “loudmouth”:

Es ist das behauptete Recht auf den Erstschlag,
der das von einem Maulhelden unterjochte
und zum organisierten Jubel gelenkte
iranische Volk auslöschen könnte,
weil in dessen Machtbereich der Bau
einer Atombombe vermutet wird.

He also criticises the delivery of German Dolphin-class submarines to Israel and asks the question:

Why do I say only now,
aged and with last ink,
that the nuclear power Israel endangers
an already fragile world peace? -
Warum sage ich jetzt erst,
gealtert und mit letzter Tinte:
Die Atommacht Israel gefährdet
den ohnehin brüchigen Weltfrieden?

So why did he remain silent for so long? We are all excited to know now! The surprising answer he gives himself is absolutely hilarious: “das Verdikt “Antisemitismus” ist geläufig”.
If I may translate that to plain English: He did not write this anti-Semitic pamphlet earlier because he was afraid of being called an anti-Semite. That is rich!

To complete the picture you have to know that Günter Grass spent his early years in the Waffen-SS and only revealed this fact back in 2006. Why did he remain silent for so long? This “poem” could have given an answer, but is is easier to point the finger to others, isn`t it? Oh, I should not forget to mention that Grass also writes he is “aligned with Israel”: “dem Land Israel, dem ich verbunden bin”. But I guess with friends like these, you don`t need ennemies.

Most media in Germany condemn the “poem”, Grass himself sees that as a campaign against him and talks about “Gleichschaltung der Medien”.

He gets applause though. From Iran.

I don`t know. But I do hope that after this disaster a better candidate will be found. And I hope this time it will be Joachim Gauck. He would be an awesome President!

The article introduces him as being an expert on the US. („Der CDU-Europa-Parlamentarier gilt als exzellenter Kenner der USA“). Well, if he is an expert you do not need enemies.

I tried to translate a few excerpts:

Elmar Brok: The downgrade is a calculated attack of this US rating agency against Europe. (…) They have declared a currency war on us.

Welt Online: The USA is leading a financial war against us?

Elmar Brok: Strong forces in the USA, especially from the financial world. Apparently their only goal is to advance Anglo-Saxon interests in Europe.

Welt Online: What kind of interests?

Elmar Brok: Financial interests. They want to shoot the Euro-zone to pieces in order to earn money.

Welt Online: You doubt transatlantic solidarity?

Elmar Brok: I do not doubt anything. (…) I only describe how things are related. At the moment, there are clear anti-European tendencies in the USA, as shown e. g. by the election campaign of Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney.

Welt Online: How come?

Elmar Brok: The picture of Europe that exists in the USA is totally false. You cannot blame the Americans for it though, as this is the picture the Anglo-Saxon press has been painting for decades. (…)

If this interview is not anti-American, I don`t know. Worst of all, Elmar Brok is member of CDU, the party I voted for. Not any more.

Agenturen und Investoren aus den USA wollen die Euro-Zone zerschießen, sagt Elmar Brok. Der CDU-Europa-Parlamentarier gilt als exzellenter Kenner der USA.

Welt Online: Herr Brok, was steckt hinter der Herabstufung wichtiger Euroländer durch die US-Ratingagentur Standard & Poor`s?

Elmar Brok: Die Abstufung ist ein gezielter Angriff der US-Ratingagentur gegen Europa. Es gibt doch keinen einzigen plausiblen Grund für die Entscheidung, etwa jetzt Italien abzuwerten. Das Land hat einen neuen Regierungschef, mit dem es wichtige Reformen umsetzt. Das gilt im Übrigen auch für Spanien. Über Frankreich müssen wir gar nicht erst reden.
Die Abstufung durch S&P ist folglich interessengelenkt. Die haben uns den Währungskrieg erklärt. Die Ratingagenturen sind mehr Krisenverstärker als Frühwarner.

Welt Online: Die USA führen einen Finanzkrieg gegen uns?

Elmar Brok: Starke Kräfte in den USA, insbesondere aus der Finanzwirtschaft. Es geht ihnen offenbar einzig und allein darum, auf diese Weise angelsächsische Interessen gegen Europa durchzusetzen.

Welt Online: Welcher Art sind diese Interessen?

Brok: Finanzieller Art. Sie wollen die Euro-Zone zerschießen, um Geld daran zu verdienen. Dieses Interesse ist im Übrigen leicht zu verifizieren. Schauen wir uns doch nur einmal die Finanzierung der Ratingagenturen an. Die bekommen ihr Geld von der Finanzwirtschaft. Von den Staaten bekommen sie nichts. Sie sind also von der Finanzwirtschaft abhängig.
Folglich bewerten sie die Bonität der Staaten nach den Interessenlagen der Finanzindustrie.

Welt Online: Aber die USA schaden sich doch selbst, wenn sie dem Euroraum schaden. Sie zerstören auf diese Weise nämlich auch einen wichtigen Absatzmarkt, oder?

Brok: Das interessiert die Finanzindustrie nicht. Die Investoren wollen jetzt die Chance nutzen, an der aktuellen Situation soviel Geld wie möglich zu verdienen.

Welt Online: Aber gibt es denn in Washington nicht auch ein erhebliches politisches Interesse an einem starken Europa?

Brok: Die Solidarität der USA gegenüber Europa verfolgte immer auch Eigeninteressen. Außerdem gibt es innerhalb der US-Regierung seit langem schon zwei Lager. Das State Department ist für ein geeintes Europa. Andere Ministerien verfolgen hingegen nach wie vor das Ziel divide et impera – teile und herrsche. Denen ist ein geteiltes, weniger einflussreiches Europa lieber.

Welt Online: Sie zweifeln an der transatlantischen Solidarität?

Brok: Nein, ich zweifle an gar nichts. Zweifellos gibt es in Washington ein bedeutendes sicherheitspolitisches Interesse an engen Beziehungen zu Europa. Aber das ist eben nur die eine Seite. Ich beschreibe lediglich, wie sich die Dinge zueinander verhalten. Es gibt derzeit deutliche anti-europäische Tendenzen in den USA, wie nicht zuletzt am Wahlkampf des republikanischen Präsidentschaftsbewerbers Mitt Romney deutlich wird.

Welt Online: Woher kommt das?

Brok: In den USA existiert ein völlig falsches Europabild. Das kann man den Amerikanern allerdings nicht vorwerfen, denn die angelsächsische Presse malt ihnen seit Jahrzehnten dieses Bild. Es gibt in den USA keine kontinentaleuropäische Sicht in der Wirtschaftsberichterstattung. Europäische Medien spielen dort keine Rolle. Alle Informationen stammen von CNN, Reuters und dem Imperium des erklärten Anti-Europäers Rupert Murdoch.

Welt Online: Sie meinen, die Murdoch-Journalisten sind angehalten, ein ganz bestimmtes Europabild zu transportieren?

Brok: Daraus macht Murdoch doch gar kein Geheimnis. Damit sich etwas ändert, müssten sich zum Beispiel deutsche und andere kontinentaleuropäische Großverlage zusammentun und gemeinsam eine englischsprachige Wirtschaftsagentur gründen, um in der weltweiten Berichterstattung die europäische Sicht darzustellen. Dann wird auch ein Mitt Romney nicht länger abfällig vom „Wohlfahrts-Europa“ reden können.
