Culinary Culture

I have just come back from doing my weekly shopping at ALDI. This week was the “American week” so I got Cranberry Juice, Brownies and … well, not much more because it was almost sold out …. no anti-Americanism to be observed here ;-)

But talking about American food a story comes to my mind: My neighbor, a very nice 80 years old lady, loves gardening and cooking. She spends hours in the kitchen every day. The other day she made me taste her selfmade “Kartoffelknödel” – delicious! She told me the recipe, but I guess if I wanted to cook like her I would have to quit my job ;-)

At the end of our conversation - completely out of the blue - she stated: “The Americans have spoiled German culinary culture.”

Wow! First, I wanted to respond, but then I thought it would be wiser to simply wait. Wait until a new American President is elected. Because then there will be no more everyday anti-Americanism in Germany ;-)
