“Anti-democratic protective shield”

In former DDR (= GDR) the official language was to call the Wall an “anti-fascist protective shield”. I found that hilarious. For if at all it was an “anti-democratic protective shield”.

So I really loved this cartoon by Burkhard Fritsche in “Welt am Sonntag”, Feb 24, 2008 about Christel Wegner. I wrote about her in an earlier post, she is the M. P. who wants Stasi back. The cartoon shows her new office in the Lower Saxon State Parliament in Hannover which instead of a door has a wall with a surveillance camera and in front lots of barbed wire. The text says: “Statt einer Bürotür bestand sie auf einem antifaschistischen Schutzwall!” = “Instead of an office-door she insisted on having an anti-fascist protective wall.”

You can find it on the WELT website if you click here and then scroll down on the right and click “Das Bild zum Sonntag – Best of WAMS”. There it is currently cartoon No. 1. Have fun!
