One of the terrorists arrested was living in Langen which is just about 20 km from where I live. And even in my birth town Darmstadt apartments have been searched. The second one grew up in Neunkirchen where I spent a holiday with my parents and my sister about twenty years ago, very idyllic place. I learned surfing at the nearby lake, Bostalsee, or to be more precise, I took a two-days surfing course and at the end I got a certificate saying I had attended ;-)
But back to serious: It is scaring to see how close they were. Not that I am surprised, no, not at all. But still it`s scaring. To know that 50 more of them are said to have been involved in preparing these thwarted terror attacks. To know that our police is not being given the tools to find them. That it is only thanks to American secret service information that these attacks could be foiled.

And please do not tell me that these “poor guys” only did it because they have been discriminated some time in their lives or because they had a bad childhood. Take Fritz G. for example, (can hardly imagine a more German name than this one), his father was an engineer, his mother a doctor, he was studying industrial engineering, do not tell me he was lacking a perspective. No, it is more like our Chief Criminal Investigator, Jörg Ziercke, put it: ” They did not have time to work, because they were busy preparing the attacks.”
