“The people of Darfur are crying out for help, …”

The people of Darfur are crying out for help, and they deserve it.

A statement that should be welcomed by Europeans and even the German peace movement. But no! It is President Bush who made it. So you should not expect any applause coming from that side. And any way, there is not so much interest in the fate of the people of Darfur in Germany. At the global day for Darfur in Berlin on April 29, this year, 120 (in words one hundred and twenty!) people showed up.
And even if people were interested in knowing more about the US position towards Sudan, they probably would not get the information. German media are not so keen on reporting favourably about President Bush, and the American ambassador in Germany is inexistent in the German media. So I will just go on citing the American President a little more, because I think he has the right message. If only now the word was being spread …

For too long, the people of Darfur have suffered at the hands of a government that is complicit in the bombing, murder, and rape of innocent civilians. My administration has called these actions by their rightful name: genocide. The world has a responsibility to help put an end to it.

That is why President Bush has announced unilateral sanctions against the Sudanese government. And is going to push for UN-support. But China already opposes further sanctions. How come a country like Sudan can so easily escape international pressure?

It`s the oil, stupid!
