Lebanon`s Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel, a prominent Christian leader and vocal critic of Syria, has been assassinated in Beirut.
One week earlier, six Cabinet ministers had resigned because they were against the creation of an international tribunal to probe the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. U.N investigators have linked Syria to the death of Hariri, but Damascus denies any involvement.
In a very moving speech Prime Minister Fouad Siniora promised to Pierre Gemayel: “Your blood will not be shed in vain.” He also said: “Give my regards to Rafik Hariri!” And the others who died for a free and independent Lebanon.
