Abu Ghraib

Mühltal, May 14th 2004

Dear Debbie,

the pictures I have seen are disgusting and at first I thought – I hoped – they were fakes. But they are real: Iraqi prisoners being humiliated by American soldiers in Abu Ghraib, the former Saddam Hussein prison. How could this happen? I do not believe that a lack of training and supervison among the prison guards can excuse such acts. On the other hand - had the supervision been better, these acts would very probably not have taken place.

Did these people lose their human values under the extreme conditions in Abu Ghraib or had they already lost these values before going to Iraq? Or is it both? We will probably never know.

The tragical dimension of all this is, that it casts a shadow upon the American soldiers in general, blaming them for what a few have done. Which is extremely unfair.

Some people even say things are just like under Saddam Hussein. But they are wrong. You just have to look at the way, the Americans deal with the scandal: Deep concern among all Americans, apologies from highest level, a full investigation and at the end, the punishment of the responsible ones. At first sight, maybe not very consoling, but at second sight, this is exactly what makes the difference between a dictatorship and a democracy.

Still, hard to get over the picture of this young woman with a big smile on her face ...

I trust in you, love Karin
